"Ole Blue"
Part 1
Just thought this might be of some interest....I am from  Southwest
Viginia...Washington County....30 miles Northeast of Bristol.....in the 60's, we had
some harsh winters in as far as snow was concerned......My Dad owned a 51
Chevrolet 2 Dr sedan....Windsor Blue....As Dolly Partin has said." we were poor
and didn't know it"....My Dad never owned a power tool, (chain saw, drills,
etc)....nor did he ever own a pair of snow tires, or chains for this car.....yes, on
many occasions, we had a snow on top of a snow...so driving was
treacherous.....he worked for a chemical company in Saltville, Va. Which was 7
miles away....a lot of the time, he worked "graveyard" shift...so he would leave the
house about 11:00 PM for his overnight work during these heavy snows..... He
would have me help him leave the house!!!!!!!!!...He would back out into the road
(US Hwy 91), and I would physically give him a "push" to get him started "over the
mountain"...Yes, he would be riding on those 670-15 plain tread tires and half-worn
out....now, we did not have "level roads"..My area was hilly with lost of curves in
the road....so....i would consider this a "driving challenge" for my Dad....but, guess
what, he knew exactly how to drive that car in those conditons...he would
say..."don;t ever touch your brake...keep it in "second" in the worst places and this
car will go right on....well....i would have to say that Dad never ended up in the
ditch, and thru his advice, i drove in some of those conditions myself, and by the
Grace of the Good Lord, neither of us ever ended up in the ditch!!!!!!!!!..I cherish
those memories of growing up in my little community of McCalls Gap in Glade
Spring, Va.................thanks for reading..............*Starvin' Marvin

PS:  we kept that car 14 years and that was my FIRST car as Dad gave it to me
later on in years...
